Ruth Ingrid Michler est née le 8 Mars 1967 à Ithaca, État de New York. Pendant sa scolarité secondaire, elle a vécu principalement à Essen, en Allemagne. Elle a fait ses études universitaires à l'Université d'Oxford, où elle était affiliée au Balliol College. En 1987, elle a obtenu le Prix Jenkyns pour un travail sur les "Trous Noirs" sous la direction du Professeur Roger Penrose. Elle a obtenu le Bachelor of Arts (Summa Cum Laude) à Oxford en 1988. Elle est alors partie en "graduate school" à l'Université de Californie, à Berkeley. Elle y a obtenu le M.A. en 1990 et le Ph. D. en 1993. Sa thèse de Ph.D. était intitulée "Composantes de Hodge de l'homologie cyclique des hypersurfaces affines."

Après avoir passé un an à Queen's University au Canada, elle a été nommée Assistant Professor à l'Université du North Texas à Denton, puis promue Associate Professor au 1er Septembre 2000.

Les publications de Ruth Michler comprennent dix articles parus ou sous presse dans sa spécialité : homologie cyclique et singularités, et un livre : "Singularities in Algebraic and Analytic Geometry" coédité avec Caroline Grant Melles, publié en Automne 2000 comme Volume 266 de la Série Contemporary Mathematics de l'American Mathematical Society. Ruth Michler avait de nombreux intérêts mathématiques, en particulier la cryptographie et les applications des mathématiques. Elle avait appelé ce séminaire AGANT : Algebraic Geometry, Algebra and Number Theory. Avec Caroline Melles, elle a organisé les Sessions Spéciales de Singularités "Singularités en Géométrie Algébrique et Analytique" aux Congrès Annuels de l'American Mathematical Society en 1999 et 2000, et au Congrès de San Francisco en Octobre 2000.

Elle a obtenu une bourse de la National Science Foundation au titre des Facilités professionnelles en Recherche et Éducation pour les femmes (POWRE) pour travailler en 2000 - 2001 au Département de Mathématiques de l'Université de Northeastern avec les Professeurs Tony Iarrobino et Marc Levine. En Octobre 2000, elle a donné une Conférence intitulée "Isolated Hypersurface Singularities and their Differentials" au Séminaire de Géométrie-Algèbre-Singularités-Combinatoire (GASC) de l'Université de Northeastern, et au Séminaire d'Algèbre de l'Université de Boston. Ayant eu des conversations mathématiques fructueuses avec plusieurs membres de l'Université de Northeastern, elle travaillait sur de nouveaux résultats: sur le tableau de son bureau elle avait écrit le 31 Octobre la démonstration d'un nouveau théorème. Celui-ci paraîtra dans un article commun avec Monique Lejeune-Jalabert. Le 1er Novembre 2000, Ruth Michler était tuée par une grande grue alors qu'elle attendait à un feu rouge pour traverser l'Avenue Huntington au croisement avec Forsyth Street à Boston.

Ruth aimait la musique, en particulier la musique classique et l'opéra. Elle allait régulièrement assister aux représentations de l'opéra de Dallas. Elle pratiquait aussi la course à pied sur de longues distances : elle courait sept miles (plus de 11 kilomètres) par jour. Elle a participé à la plupart des marathons de Boston de ces dernières cinq années. Elle était renommée pour son énergie, et pour la façon dont elle se donnait à fond dans tout ce qu'elle entreprenait. Au moment de sa mort, elle travaillait sur l'organisation de deux autres colloques de singularités : une rencontre prévue en France en été 2001, et qui est devenue la présente rencontre du CIRM, et un colloque à Annapolis au Maryland cet Automne 2001. Les deux colloques ont été dédiés à sa mémoire.

 

Brief Biography :

Ruth Ingrid Michler was born on March 8, 1967 in Ithaca, New York. Through high school she lived principally in Germany, eventually in Essen. She went to the University of Oxford, UK, for undergraduate studies, and was affiliated with Balliol College (Oxford). In 1987, she won a Jenkyns prize with an essay on "Black Holes" under the direction of Prof. Roger Penrose. She received her B.A. (Summa Cum Laude) at Oxford in 1988. She went to graduate school at the University of California (Berkeley), completing an M.A. in 1990, and a Ph. D. in 1993. Her Ph.D. dissertation was entitled "Hodge components of cyclic homology of affine hypersurfaces."

After visiting Queen's University (Canada) for one year, she went to the University of North Texas in Denton as an Assistant Professor, and was promoted to Associate Professor effective September 1, 2000.

Professor Michler's publications include ten articles printed or in press in her specialized area of cyclic homology and singularities, and a book "Singularities in Algebraic and Analytic Geometry" coedited with Caroline Grant Melles, published in the fall of 2000 as Volume 266 of the American Mathematical Society's Contemporary Mathematics Series. She had many mathematical interests, including cryptography and the applications of mathematics. Her vita lists twenty-five talks, in locales throughout Europe and America, including Purdue University, Genova, and Antwerp. She traveled to France to work with Professors Monique Lejeune-Jalabert and Bernard Teissier. She also invited Professor Bernard Teissier to visit the University of North Texas. She organized a joint seminar for the University of North Texas, the University of Texas at Arlington, and Texas Christian University, which was called the AGANT (Algebraic Geometry, Algebra and Number Theory) Seminar. With Caroline Melles, she organized Special Sessions on "Singularities in Algebraic and Analytic Geometry" at the American Mathematical Society Annual Meetings in 1999 and 2000, and at the San Francisco Meeting in October 2000.

She received an National Science Foundation Professional Opportunities for Women in Research and Education (POWRE) Fellowship to visit the Mathematics Department of Northeastern University in 2000 - 20001 and to work with Professors Tony Iarrobino and Marc Levine. In October 2000, she gave a talk entitled "Isolated Hypersurface Singularities and their Differentials" at Northeastern University's Geometry-Algebra-Singularities-Combinatorics (GASC) seminar, and also at Boston University's Algebra Seminar. She had mathematical conversations with many members of the Northeastern University mathematics department, and was developing new results: on the blackboard of her office was a short proof of a new theorem, written October 31, 2000. This theorem will appear in a joint paper with Monique Lejeune-Jalabert. On November 1, 2000, Ruth Michler, was run over by a large crane while waiting in front of a red traffic light to cross Huntington Avenue at the corner with Forsyth Street in Boston.

Ruth enjoyed music, including the symphony, and opera: she was a regular visitor to the Dallas Opera. She also was an avid long distance runner, who ran seven miles a day; she ran in most of the Boston Marathons for the last five years. She was known for her energy, and the level of her commitment to all that she undertook. At the time of her death, she was in the process of coorganizing two more singularities conferences - a proposed meeting in France in the summer of 2001, which became this CIRM meeting, and a conference in Annapolis, Maryland in the fall of 2001. Both of these conferences have been dedicated to her memory.
